Follow the canal into the season.

The High Line Canal offers two gentle ways to reset this month: a six mile history ride from DeLaney Farm on September 5 and a guided birding walk at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve on September 12.

Advance waivers are required. Children under 14 must attend with an adult.

A calm hour now can make the first cold stretch of fall feel a lot easier.

  1. Warm up the heating system

    Run the heat before the first cold night and schedule service if anything sounds or smells unusual.

  2. Dial back outdoor watering

    Shorter days usually mean landscapes need less water. Follow your provider’s current watering rules.

  3. Seal the small gaps

    Check exterior caulk and weather stripping around windows and doors before colder air arrives.

  4. Clear the drainage path

    Remove leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts and ground drains.

  5. Check safety devices

    Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
