Homeowner Corner

Five smart checks before winter settles in.

November is the calm window for handling the small things that make cold weather easier.

  1. Protect pipes and outdoor faucets

Disconnect hoses, cover exposed faucets and follow the correct winter steps for your irrigation and backflow system.

  2. Check heat and air flow

Replace the furnace filter, clear supply vents and make sure the thermostat and whole home humidifier are working properly.

  3. Finish the gutter cleanup

Clear the last leaves and confirm downspouts move melting snow safely away from the foundation.

  4. Prepare for the first real storm

Place snow shovels, ice melt, windshield scrapers and emergency supplies where they are easy to reach.

  5. Review fire and carbon monoxide safety

Test alarms and arrange professional fireplace or chimney service before regular winter use.
